it seems that this truly (nothing new here) was THE YEAR. other than january, february, and june the boys were constantly on the move, either in the middle of a run of remarkably distinct flavor or on their way to one...

having played 130 shows in '68, 150 in '69 and 149 in '70, the pace finally slowed in '71 to 82 shows and then 85 in 1972.

while '71 was a transitional year they had smoothed out all the edges by 1972 and put together one sting of remarkable shows after another.... not so much a year of "tours" as a year of related vignettes -- revealing glimpses of the same story...

a couple months after the europe tour represent the only "down" period of the year. but from the Berkeley Run in august through to the end of the year -- the creative juices seem to have been freely flowing non-stop.
